What to check before buying a Netherlands VPS server: CPU, RAM, disk, port, IPs, backups. How to measure latency and place an order.
Search for "VPS Netherlands" and you get a pile of near-identical price tables that do not tell you which server fits your project. This guide skips the shop window. It covers why a Netherlands VPS server makes sense, which plan parameters actually matter, how to measure latency yourself, and how to order from WeaselCloud step by step.
In short. A VPS in the Netherlands suits projects with an audience in Europe and nearby countries that want a low price and EU jurisdiction. Check four things: CPU and RAM for your workload, disk type, port speed (100 Mbit/s on WeaselCloud's NL plans), and how backups and support work. Do not guess latency: measure it with
pingandmtr.
Why host in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is one of the main junctions of the European internet. Large traffic exchanges sit there (AMS-IX in Amsterdam is among the biggest in the world), and many networks connect to them directly. Peering means two networks exchanging traffic directly, without a middleman. Fewer hops between you and the server usually means steadier response times. For visitors in Europe and the CIS countries it is normally a good spot: the distance is short and the routes are well worn.
The second reason is jurisdiction. The country is in the EU, so European law applies to data on the server, GDPR included. That does not make a project "GDPR compliant" by itself. The regulation is about how you handle personal data, not where the hardware stands. Still, if your customers are European, an EU server removes some of the questions.
One caveat about the exact location. The Netherlands VPS page says the servers are in a Tier 3 datacenter but names neither the city nor the operator. So do not assume a particular exchange point; check the route yourself (how is below).
When the Netherlands is not the best pick: if nearly all your users are in Moscow or the Far East, another location will be closer. The general approach is in the guide to choosing a VPS.
Who a Netherlands VPS is for
- Websites and online shops with a European or mixed audience: WordPress, small CMS projects, landing pages, APIs.
- Apps and bots that need an always-running process and a stable address.
- Test and working environments: check a release in Europe, run builds and tests, keep a staging copy next to production.
- Backup storage and small databases when latency to the main server is not critical.
What not to do: the NL plans page asks customers not to order these servers for game servers. If that is your use case, pick another solution rather than risk a block.
What to check in a plan
Checks below run in order of importance. The right-hand column is what the WeaselCloud location page lists for NL Standard plans as of 2026-10-26.
Parameter | What to check | NL Standard at WeaselCloud |
|---|---|---|
CPU and RAM | Dedicated or shared resources; how many cores and how much RAM your load needs | KVM; from 1 vCPU and 1 GB up to 16 vCPU and 64 GB (DDR4 ECC) |
Disk | SSD or NVMe, size | SSD, 20 to 500 GB |
Port | Speed in Mbit/s, "unlimited" with or without conditions | 100 Mbit/s, unlimited traffic |
IPs | How many addresses, whether IPv6 is included, whether you can add more | 1 IPv4 included, up to 10 in total (slider in the order form); IPv6 is advertised on the main site |
Backups | Snapshots and backups: paid, free or DIY | No paid backup option is visible in the order form or on the plans page: you make copies yourself |
Management | Reboot, console, OS reinstall | In the panel: console, reboot, rescue mode, reinstall |
Payment and support | Payment methods, contact channels | Check the payment list at checkout; tickets, Telegram, email |
CPU and RAM
KVM virtualisation means your server has its own OS kernel, The plans page does not say whether CPU resources are dedicated or shared with neighbours; ask support before paying if your load is constant. That matters because on simpler schemes neighbours can eat a shared CPU. How many cores and how much memory you need depends on load; the article how much CPU and RAM a VPS needs gives starting points. A small site is usually fine on 1-2 GB, a CMS with a database is more comfortable on 4 GB. You do not have to buy "for growth": the plan can be changed later, see how to change your plan.
Disk
NL Standard plans use SSD. The site lists NVMe only for the separate High-CPU line in Moscow, so do not count on it in the Netherlands. A website and a small database run fine on SSD; the difference between disk types and how to measure it are in NVMe, SSD or HDD.
Port and traffic
100 Mbit/s is at most about 12.5 MB/s, not 100. For a site, an API or a bot that is normally plenty: a page weighs hundreds of kilobytes. The port becomes the bottleneck if you serve large files or video to many people at once. What "port" and "unlimited" really mean, and how to test speed, is in a separate article.
IP addresses
The site lists one free IPv4 per server; the order form has a slider for 1 to 10 addresses in total. IPv6 is advertised on the main page as free for every server; after ordering, confirm with ip -6 addr that an address is actually assigned. If the server sits behind a domain you rarely need extra addresses.
Backups, panel, payment and support
Backups are a common blind spot. The order form and the plans page show no paid backup or snapshot option, so plan your own: see how to back up a VPS yourself. If it is critical, ask support before paying, not after losing data.
You manage the server from the my.weasel.cloud client area. The service page offers a console, soft and hard reboot, rescue mode, OS reinstall with confirmation, and a boot log. The console is what saves you after you lock yourself out of SSH. Payment methods are listed on the site (cards, cryptocurrency and others), but the exact list for your country shows only at checkout. You can reach the team by ticket, Telegram or email; this guide explains how to write a ticket that gets solved in one reply. The site gives no response time, so do not build a schedule around it.
Which plan fits your task
Prices and stock on the page change; the figures below are from 2026-10-26. Check the location page for current ones.
Task | Plan (vCPU / RAM / SSD) | Price per month | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
Test environment, small bot | Io NL: 1 / 1 GB / 20 GB | $3.00 | Linux only |
Simple site or landing page | Calisto NL: 2 / 2 GB / 30 GB | $4.00 | Linux only |
CMS with a database, small shop | Himalia NL: 2 / 4 GB / 60 GB | $6.00 | Windows: per the plans page (the main site marks it "coming soon") |
Several services, noticeable load | Elara NL: 4 / 8 GB / 100 GB | $12.00 | Windows: per the plans page (the main site marks it "coming soon") |
These are examples, not advice to take the cheapest one. Choose by load: if unsure, start with the smallest plan that is clearly enough and look at real memory use after a couple of weeks (free -h). The page also shows an "Available" counter for each plan, and the larger configurations run out.
How to test latency to the server yourself
Latency (RTT, round-trip time) is how long a packet takes to reach the server and come back, measured in milliseconds. It depends on distance and route, and one number does not decide page speed: a new connection adds extra round trips for TCP and TLS. So a difference of tens of milliseconds matters for apps that make many requests and barely shows on an ordinary page.
Measure from where your visitors will be, not from the server. First you need an address to test. The site offers a trial on request; ask support whether you can get a test address in the Netherlands (no guarantee). If not, order the smallest plan for a month and measure on that.
The first command shows overall response time. The -c 10 flag sends ten packets instead of an endless stream (on Windows the equivalent is ping -n 10):
ping -c 10 SERVER_IPThe last line reports minimum, average, maximum and spread (min/avg/max/mdev). Look at the average and the spread: steady numbers beat "good on average, jumpy at times". Packet loss in ping alone does not prove a problem, since many networks rate-limit ICMP separately from normal traffic.
The second command shows the path through each hop. It is not preinstalled; install it with sudo apt install mtr-tiny (Ubuntu and Debian). The -r flag prints a final report, -w keeps hostnames from being cut off, -z shows autonomous system numbers, and -c 50 sets 50 probes:
mtr -rwz -c 50 SERVER_IPFor a website, test the web port itself, the same measurement over TCP (some systems need sudo):
mtr -rwz -T -P 443 -c 50 SERVER_IPWhat counts as normal? A jump at one middle hop that does not carry through to the end is usually harmless: routers answer diagnostic probes more slowly than they forward traffic. Worry when the rise appears at a hop and persists to the last line, or when the last line shows loss while earlier ones are clean. Even then it only hints at where the delay sits; it is not a verdict. Repeat at different times of day and compare.
We do not show command output: it depends on your ISP and city, and someone else's numbers would only mislead you. To compare locations, run the same commands against each.
How to order a Netherlands VPS at WeaselCloud
The full walkthrough is in how to order your first VPS. The short version for the Netherlands:
- Open the Netherlands VPS page, or in the client area click "Заказать новую услугу" (Order a new service) and pick the Netherlands category in the left-hand list.
- Click "Заказать" (Order) on the plan you want. If the "Доступно" (Available) counter on a plan is zero, take the next one.
- Under "Выберите платёжный цикл" (Choose billing cycle) keep monthly: for a first server it is easier not to lock in a long term. The location page shows monthly prices only.
- Under "Операционная система" (Operating system) choose a recent Ubuntu or Debian release. The order form's list can differ from the reinstall list, so go by what is on your screen.
- Leave the "IP Адреса" (IP addresses) slider on one address unless you have a reason for more. Click "Далее" (Next).
- On the "Просмотр и оплата" (Review and pay) page, accept the terms, click "Оформить" (Place order) and pay.
After payment the service appears in your list with the status "Активный" (Active). The address and root password arrive by email and are also shown on the service page. Then connect over SSH and close the basic gaps with securing a fresh VPS in 10 minutes.
FAQ
Why do people choose the Netherlands for a VPS?
For its position in Europe, strong connectivity (major traffic exchanges operate in the country) and EU jurisdiction. For an audience in Europe and nearby countries it is usually a convenient spot. You should still check the route yourself.
What latency should I expect to a Netherlands server?
No exact figure can be given in advance: it depends on your ISP, city and route. You can find out in a minute with ping and mtr; run them several times at different hours and look at the spread, not the best result.
Is a Netherlands VPS good for an online shop?
Yes, if the audience is mostly European and you have set up backups and protection. For a shop on a CMS with a database, look at 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM or more. A 100 Mbit/s port is enough for ordinary pages.
Does a Netherlands VPS include automatic backups?
The order form and the plans page show no such option. Make copies yourself, or ask support whether a separate service is possible. Do not count on backups until you get confirmation.
Takeaways
- The Netherlands is a convenient location for a European audience, with EU jurisdiction and good connectivity, but not a universal answer.
- Pick the plan by load: 1-2 GB of RAM is fine for a small site, 4 GB is more comfortable for a CMS with a database.
- NL Standard plans have an SSD disk and a 100 Mbit/s port: enough for sites and APIs, not for serving large files.
- Backups are not automatic: set up your own before important data lands on the server.
- Measure latency yourself with
pingandmtrfrom where your audience lives. - Game servers are not allowed on NL plans, so do not order for them.
